Improving Noxturnal Performance by Configuring Antivirus Software

Issue:

We have identified a situation where users can experience slowness in starting and opening recordings on Noxturnal 6.x when Windows Defender is active. This issue does not affect Noxturnal 5.1.3. The slowdown occurs due to Windows Defender’s interfering with Noxturnal’s operations. This causes:

  • Slow Operations: Starting and opening recordings can take longer than expected.
  • System Freezing: Constant micro-freezing and unresponsiveness occur during operations in Noxturnal 6.x.

Solution:

Anti-virus programs should ignore folders required by Noxturnal. Folders that Noxturnal requires:

Recording Location Default:

%MYDOCUMENTS%\My Recordings

F.ex: C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Recordings

Noxturnal Settings Default:

%PROGRAMDATA%\Nox Medical\Noxturnal

F.ex: C:\ProgramData\Nox Medical\Noxturnal

User Specific Settings Default:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Nox Medical\Noxturnal

F.ex: C:\Users\SomeUser\AppData\Local\Nox Medical\Noxturnal

These locations can be changed in Noxturnal, and if any such modifications have been made, they must be added to the ignore list.

Note that this should be done in collaboration with your local IT department to ensure that cybersecurity policies are maintained for your specific site.

Specific Instructions for Windows Defender

Users should omit the folders from being scanned by Windows Defender.

  1. Open Windows Security and navigate to Virus & Threat Protection.
  2. Select Manage Settings under Virus & Threat Protection settings.
  3. Scroll down to Exclusions and choose Add or Remove Exclusions.
  4. Add the following folders to exclusions:
    • Data location where recordings are stored.
    • Location for the Default and User databases.

Noxturnal reads and writes to the following folders by default:

  • %localappdata%/Nox Medical/Noxturnal
  • %programdata%/Nox Medical/Noxturnal
  • %UserProfile%\Documents\My Recordings

These locations can be confirmed in the Settings.

After excluding these folders, Noxturnal’s performance should significantly improve. If performance issues continue, please get in touch with your local support agent.

Why Does It Affect Noxturnal 6.x and Not 5.1.3?

The difference in behavior between Noxturnal versions is attributed to Antivirus interaction. Noxturnal 6.X experiences interference due to real-time scanning, unlike its predecessor.
